Nebulisation in Children

For those who dont know about Nebulisation, the definition is :

"Nebulisation is the breaking down of a liquid into very small droplets, which in the case of medication, can be inhaled and in consequence deposited right into the problem area in the lungs. The advantage of that is that a concentrated amount can be deposited into a targeted area."

In the simple terms, its the inhalation of medicines into the lungs directly to stop wheezing that has developed due to severe phlegm which doesn't go away with oral medicines.

We had been doing nebulisation for Janas during the second week for Ranju and third week for Rakshu in June. Even with the strong medicines they were taking for severe cough and phlegm they did not recover. Hence when we took them to the doctor he suggested nebulisation to ease out breathing. They had developed wheezing and could not sleep at nights. But I was a bit reluctant to go on with the process but doctor said it is definitely needed otherwise they may not be able to get "sufficient oxygen to brain".

We had bought separate kits for each of them. The medicines used were berodual and plumicort though dosages were different.4 times(means 4 hourly) for Ranju and 3 times(means 6 hourly) for Rakshu. They definitely felt better and were able to sleep at nights after the process. After 3 days of nebulisation at home, we continued with medication for few more days until they felt better.

The disadvantage of nebuliser is the cost itself and they are not designed to alleviate acute symptoms such as asthma attacks which might arise.Child nebulisers turn the respiratory medicine into a mist, which the child then breaths for at least five to ten minutes. It might be difficult for parents to keep their child still for the entire length of treatment.
